Congrats to Emily and Hunter for their paper on composite gel polymer electrolytes. We thank the Peaslee group at ND for help with particle-induced gamma-emission spectroscopy (PIGE) that is here for the first time used to characterize lithium transport in inorganic-organic composite electrolytes.

Congratulations to Bumjun for publication of his paper on Coupling of 3D Porous Hosts for Li Metal Battery Anodes with Viscous Polymer Electrolytes in JES! Thank you to the Myung group for electrospinning the PAN mat and to the Bohn group for assistance with COMSOL simulations.

Bumjun’s new paper on ionic speciation and transport in novel magnesium polymer electrolytes is now published! We thank the Mindemark group at Upsalla University for the inspiration, use of their polymer, and NMR measurements, and we thank the O’Brien group at ND for help with IR spectroscopy.

Congratulations to Buket and Tanmay on the publication of the review article that they have been working on! Review—Electrolyte and Electrode Designs for Enhanced Ion Transport Properties to Enable High Performance Lithium Batteries is now available open-access via the Journal of the Electrochemical Society.

The group has been awarded two new grants from the NSF to study all-solid polymer batteries: CBET-2044386 “Engineering All-Solid Metal-Sulfur Batteries: Transport, Speciation, and Kinetics in Sulfur Copolymer Composite Cathodes” and CBET-2100811 “Excellence in Research: Investigation of Interfacial Chemical and Ion Transport in Solid Inorganic-Polymer Electrolytes”. Read about the first project on the ND CBE department website. The second project is in collaboration with Prof. Lamartine Meda’s group at Xavier University of Louisiana.

The Schaefer lab is tenured! Yippee!!

This month we say goodbye to undergraduate researchers Emily Doyle and Seancarlos Gonzalez, who are graduating and heading off to PhD study. Emily will be joining the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, and Seancarlos is headed to the University of Washington Department of Chemical Engineering. We will miss you both very much and are looking forward to hearing about your future endevours!
